Geocache Description:

The Liskeard Turnpike Trust was formed in 1761 and centred upon the town of Liskeard.

Its primary responsibilities were:

  • The roads from Callington and St Austell ( where it linked with the St Austell and Lostwithiel Turnpike Trust at West Taphouse)

and by extensions granted in the 1800s:

  • The roads to the two ferry crossings at Saltash and Torpoint
  • Roads from Liskeard down the valley to Looe

The Looe Mills Toll House is conveniently placed on the west side of the town and sits on what was the A390/A38 Turnpike on the southerly route for traffic from the west of Cornwall to Plymouth via the ferries across the Tamar.

The Toll House is, thankfully, a Grade II listed building and even today looks much like it did when built in 1837. It sits alongside the Dobwalls Bypass on a closed-off section of the original A38 when it ran through the centre of Liskeard.

Parking is available adjacent to the cache but please watch out for walkers and cyclists as this section of the old road is part of a cycle route/path.

The Toll house can be seen clearly from the A38 although probably remains unseen as the speed of traffic passing by leaves little time for sightseeing!!

A bit of careful map-reading is needed to work out how to get onto the old old road from the Moorswater/Dobwalls slip off the A38.

The Toll House is a private residence - please do not tespass on their property.
The cache is a small click lock pot with room for small TBs. Please re-hide carefully and watch out for muggles.

All active UK Toll House caches can be found here.

If other geocachers would like to set caches near UK Toll Houses, please get in touch with The Chens first and they will issue a number in the same way as the Church Micro series. They ask that the name is in the form "UK Toll House number - Local name". If you have a system of numbering your own caches, as they do, please put that last.
