Come and visit the amazing Kpatawee Waterfalls in Bong County, Liberia!
Find Bong county's first geocache while you're here!
Kpatawee Waterfalls ("PAH-tah-wee") is a cascade of water making its way down a rocky slope in Liberia's pristine rainforest -- sometimes pretty gently, other times thunderous, depending on the season. It's possible to get here as a long daytrip from Monrovia (4 hours drive one-way), and pay the small fee to get to the day-use area. But once you're here and see it for yourself, you might want to say (at least) a night at the camp at the foot of the falls. It's worth the trek!

The falls are about 45 minutes of a drive over a dirt road after the turnoff from the Gbarnga-Gbondo highway. Signs show the way from Phebe. From the direction of Monrovia, that's past CARI, but before the town of Gbarnga. No 4x4 needed during the dry season. When it rains, you usually will be fine in a 2wd as well, but it heavily depends on present conditions!
The first ever geocache in Bong county is close enough to the falls that you can see and hear them while you look for it but far enough that no high water will get to it during rainy season. Tropical conditions are not nice to cache-contents, so please check for and try to resolve excessive moisture inside.
No cellphone reception out by the falls, so make sure to have all required information with you without data connection!
While you're here, take a dip in the pools below the falls, go for a hike to the upper falls (~1 hour, either along the road or part of it through the forest), and have a chat with bosslady Josephine. She has jokes and stories and loves to share them around a bonfire. Ask her about the water pipeline that President Tolbert had put in for local rice cultivation!
Please note that we'll reserve the right to remove your log online if you don't sign the physical paper. Shoutout to the struggles of Kendeja Cache!
