Geocache Description:

The Bridge Pier

This bridge pier is the addment of the imperial road whose construction was arranged by Emperor Franz I in the years 1846 until 1848.

The bridge was destroyed by a thunderstorm in 1855, the pier has continued to exist to this day.

The upper Vinschgau valley has always been an important connection across the Alps.

Already the Romans led the road Via Claudia Augusta across the pass "Reschenpass" around 46 AD.

The route of the road built during the reign of Emperor Maximilian (1459 until 1519) also ran along the upper Vinschgau.
