First Congregational Church History

First Congregational Church

This cache is placed near the First Congregational Church which was completed in 1903. While this building was not included in the Adventure Lab, it is worth a look.

The church was originally founded in 1883 as the Tabernacle Church of Whatcom with a sanctuary on the corner of 'F' Street and Astor Street. In 1902, the congregation restructured to become the First Congregational Church. They started constructing a gothic style church at the corner of 'H' Street and Clinton Street in that same year and it was completed in 1903. This building continued as a church until the First Congregational moved to their current location on Cornwall Avenue in 1937.

The Bellingham Theater Guild bought the building in 1944 and renovated it for use as a playhouse. Most of the exterior features have been preserved as they were when the building served as a church. The obvious changes are various exterior stairs and the elevator shaft that were all added for safety and accessibility to the second story auditorium. Some of the windows were also covered. While the original steeple is intact, the bells have been removed.
