This is the fourth in a series of caches placed with permission from the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Please park at the suggested waypoint at the entrance to the woods. We recommend that you create and download an off-line list in advance, as reception may be poor in some areas of the woods.
Rathmullan Wood is one of only a few remnants of Oak Forest that once covered Ireland. It gives us a glimpse of what the country looked like to our ancestors! The oaks are Sessile Oaks and there are beech trees that are over 100 years old. Beech are non-native so they will be replaced by oaks when they die. Fallen trees are not removed but will become a source of food for fungi and insects.

Sitka Spruce.
On your way back to the car look out for this 'candelabra' shaped tree. It is a Sitka Spruce which, although non-native, has been allowed to stay in the woods due to it's unusual shape. Please respect the flora and fauna and remember that this is a Special Area of Conservation.
The Cache.
The cache is a camo bison. Please bring tweezers and a pen. Tree cover affects the GPS signal so a Spoiler had been included in the gallery.
