Flag of Uruguay

The national flag of Uruguay has a field of nine equal horizontal bands alternating white and blue. Uruguay Flag has a canton in white, charged with the Sun of May spreading 16 rays extend, alternating between the triangular and wavy.

The flag was initially approved by law on December 16, 1828. During that time, there used to be 19 stripes until July 11, 1830. Later, the new law reduced the number of stripes in the Flag of Uruguay to nine.

History of Uruguay Flag

Uruguay has used its present flag since 1830. But, prior to this, Uruguay flew a quantity of diverse flags while it was under Spanish and Brazilian instruction. Between 1821 and 1825, when Uruguay was recognized as Provincia Oriental, a flag with three flat stripes of green and white was hovered. The flag flown between 1828 and 1830 was very alike to the flag hovered today with a number of alterations. The sun contained in the left hand corner was somewhat different. Moreover, there were 19 stripes on the flag, likened to the nine bands featured on the contemporary flag. Of these 19 stripes, nine were light blue and 10 were white. The nine light blue bands characterized the original national subdivisions of Uruguay.

Uruguay Flag Design and Symbolic Meaning

The flat stripes on the flag signify the nine original subdivisions of Uruguay, based on the U.S. flag, where the bands symbolize the original 13 colonies. The first flag designed in 1828 had 9 light blue hoops; this number was abridged to 4 in 1830 due to discernibility problems from aloofness. The Sun of May characterizes the May Revolution of 1810. The Sun of May is a metaphorical sun that signifies the sun god of the Inca religion.
