It is generally accepted that the Angora goat originated in the high lands of Tibet from where it spread to the Middle East and eventually found a new home on the Anatolian Flats in Turkey.
Different goat breeds have evolved over the centuries in adaption to diverse climatic conditions in various parts of the world. Intelligent breeders probably used their skills and natural mutations in the breed to improve desirable characteristicts in the fleece-bearing goats which developed into todays Angoras, so named after their area of origin in Turkey.
The original peoples of Southern Africa, the Khoi-San, kept short-haired goats, which was used mainly for meat and skins.
