If you look out towards the bay you will see what remains of the above Wood's Island Bungalow. The bungalow is pictured in the above pictures in its original condition. Built in 1892 by William Sayen and was accessible by a narrow foot bridge from this area. The bungalow served as a hunting club where guests enjoyed gunning, fishing and card playing during their stay. After Sayen passed away Robert Wood, whom the island is named after, purchased the club in 1920. Wood spent a significant amount of money to refurbish the old club and convert it into his home which he lived until one windy January night in 1932, the house caught fire from the heating system. The flames were visible for twenty miles, and the house and all its treasures were lost. Harry Marti, the former mayor of Harvey Cedars, which the park is dedicated to, purchased Woods Island but was unable to build there due to state restrictions. Upon his passing the Marti family donated the island to the town of Harvey Cedars. The island now, or whats left of it, is used by boaters to anchor up on the sandbar and hang out in the summer. Bricks and other building materials from the fishing club can still be seen at low tide on the island. Enjoy the park and views as we do and happy caching!!
