What is NFC???
Near Field Communication, better known as NFC, is a proximity-based wireless communication standard. Unlike Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, however, NFC interaction is limited to an extremely short range. NFC is found modern smartphones and many other devices. Its the technology behind Google and Apple Pay and its what allows you to tag on and off public transport without a paper ticket.
But how is it being used in a Geocache?
Empty NFC tags can be bought and then loaded with whatever data you wish, such as youtube links or in this case, coordinates. You then hold your phone up to the tag to access the data.
At the posted coordinates you will find a board with an NFC tag hidden on it somewhere. To find the final coordinates, simply move your phone slowly around the board til something pops up. iPhones 7 and up and most recent Android phones will support NFC.
You may need to enable NFC on your phone. It should already be enabled on iPhones. On Android devices, if you have Google Pay set up then you're ready to go, if not, you may need to search on the internet on how to turn it on as it can be different for every phone.
FTF Swag includes: Some blank NFC tags, Sony earphones, Expired scratchcard and more.
