If you have a hockey team that is at home and the referee is giving them favorable calls, what might I call that referee? A *****

Zebras, as they are often called based on there black and white striped uniforms are the on ice officials at a hockey game. Without them you can have a game, but not an official one.

At hockeysHhighestOlevelsMyouEwillRsee 4 officials on ice. A Referee, Asst. Referee, and two linesman. Often in High School or younger you may see three officials a Referee and two Linesman. Sometimes at the lowest levels just a Linesman and a Ref.

Referee This is the lead on ice official that is responsible for general supervision of the game. They are the ones responsible to make most infractions throughout the whole ice. They are responsible for faceoffs between the blue lines. If there are two referees they will often each cover a half of the ice

Linesman The Linesman are primarily watching the infractons with the centerline and blue lines? What does that mean? They are usually to the side watching for offsides and icing. They usually are split up on each side of the ice and try to stay towards the neutral zone.

Off Ice Officials      There some off ice officials that are helpful as well.

  • Official Scorer - this official is the one that keeps the official record of the game(stats). They may also count shots on goal for the teams. They record the stats as reported from the refs through the hole in the glass at the scorers table.
  • Time Clock Manager - in charge of starting/stopping the clock as needed. Keeping track of penalty times. Tracking Score/shots for the scoreboard.
  • In the pros/college there may a video review official.
  • In some cases there may be goal judges as well that flick the goal light/horn and sit a the ends of the arena. Historically in a little box with a switch.
