Brief Introduction

Most people in Taiwan type in Bopomofo (注音), but still some others type in Cangjie (倉頡), let's learn more about it!

Cangjie input method (倉頡輸入法) was invented by Mr. Chu Bong-Foo in 1976, he gave up his copyright a few years later so that everyone could use it freely. There are many versions and varients developing form it, but their core concepts are basically the same; currently version 3 (三代倉頡) is the most prevalent, it's supported by gboard in smartphones and by microsoft traditional Chinese IME in PCs; the following content is also based on version 3.

Briefly How It Works

There are 24 radicals (字根) in total, they represent 24 basic shapes (基礎字形) by themselves, and also dozens of auxiliary shapes (輔助字形) listing as follows. The bold blue characters are basic shapes, while the others in black are auxiliary shapes.

The locations of these radicals on a keyboard are as follows:

Each chracters can be decomposed into at most five Cangjie codes, here are some basic rules:

  • Direction of decomposition: left to right, top to bottom, and outside to inside
  • Geometrically connected forms: take at most four Cangjie codes, namely the first, second, third, and last codes
  • Geometrically unconnected forms that can be broken into two subforms (e.g., 你):
  1. identify the two geometrically connected subforms according to the direction of decomposition rules (i.e., 人 and 尔)
  2. take the first and last codes of the first subform (人)
  3. take the first, second, and last code of the second subform (弓火)

  • Geometrically unconnected forms that can be broken into multiple subforms (e.g., 謝):
  1. identify the first geometrically connected subform according to the direction of decomposition rules (i.e., 言)
  2. take the first and last codes of that form (卜口)
  3. next, break the remainder (i.e., 射) into subforms (i.e., 身 and 寸)
  4. take the first and last codes of the first subform (竹竹)
  5. take the last code of the last subform (戈)

Some Examples

After the basic rules, let's look into some examples:

Geometrically connected forms (無法分割)

[top to bottom, all three codes]

[top to bottom, all four codes]

[top to bottom, first, second, third and last codes]

Geometrically unconnected forms that can be broken into two subforms

[left:水, right:土戈]

[left:一口(all two codes), right:尸手火(first, second, last codes)]

[up:人, bottom:戈日女(all three codes)]

[up:廿人(first and last codes), bottom:戈日女(all three codes)]

Geometrically unconnected forms that can be broken into multiple subforms

[left:弓月(土is inside 月, so takes 弓月 instead of 弓土), up right:尸竹(all two codes), bottom right:手(last code)]

[left:竹人, middle:土土, right:弓 (last code)]

[up:田中(first and last codes), bottom left:女火(first and last codes), bottom right:土(last code)]

[up:十, middle:一山(first and last codes), bottom:金(last code)]

After the examples above, let's look into more "intimidating looking" ones:

豔=山廿土戈廿

[left:山廿(first and last codes), up right:土戈(all two codes), bottom right:廿(last code)]

[up:卜口(first and last codes), bottom left:月, bottom right:月弓(first and last codes)]

[left:卜月(first and last codes), right:卜尸心(first, second and last codes)]

龜=弓難山 (難 is used in some occasions to represent a complex shape)

[up to bottom, all three codes]

[up:尸, middle:卜卜(first and last codes), bottom:戈(last code)]

About the cache

Great respect if you went through all of the above and have not closed the cache page yet. (to be honest when I first read about Cangjie, I put the book aside after a few glances)

Please activate Cangjie IME in phones or computers for the following questions. Remember to press space after each character.

1.

The final coordinates are N 22° 59.UVW E 120° 12.XYZ

V=一土弓人

X=戈心一一金

Z=土月一廿

U, W, Y could be found in the next question.

2.

The translation of "臺灣文學館" is "National Museum of Taiwanese Literature", it has a wide range of exhibitions, no tickets required to enter. What are these five characters' Changjie codes? Please enter the corresponding english alphabets without space, you could check your answer below.

(for example, "倉頡" 's codes are"人戈日口 土口一月金", so please enter "oiargrmbc")

(p.s. if you don't speak Chinese, please refer to the picture "Chinese numbers" at the bottom of the cache page)

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
