Gate Hours: April 1rst through October 31rst: 9:00 am-6 pm. November 1rst through April 1rst: 9:00 am - 4pm. A brand new addtion to the Colorado Spirit Quest series, placed with permission from Colorado Spirit Quest manager Joe Friday. The cache is located approximately 1.25 miles up a well graded dirt road from the main gate. If you haven't been to the actual cemetery up top, I strongly suggest driving another .30 mile from GZ and take in the glorious views surrounding this outstanding place of eternal rest.
Mount Lindo Cremation Nature Garden and Mausoleum is open year round and is affiliated with Olinger Mortuaries. Unique in all of the world, this mountain top cemetery has two mausoleums, a chapel, garden crypts, traditional ground burial and "one of a kind" cremation nature garden for the cremated remains. As you look to the west of Denver in the foothills in the evening, you will see the Olinger Mount Lindo Cross illuminated. The cross on Mount Lindo began as a gesture of love between two people in the early 1940's. Francis Van Derbur once owned the land at Mount Lindo. He decided he would put a light at the top of the mountain so his wife, Pearl, would be able to see where he would rest after he died. the Cross began construction in 1963, and was lit for the first time on Easter morning in 1964. It is the largest electrically lighted cross in this country, possibly in the world. The cross measures 393 feet vertically and 254 feet horizontally. It can be seen from a distance of 80 miles. Shortly after the land was sold to Olinger Mortuaries and thus began the Mount Lindo Cemetery.
"COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST"
The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches started in 2008. Placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have 'walked' before us. There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series will introduce you to many of them. The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.
The Colorado Spirit Quest endeavor is an enormous and relentless task. It cannot be accomplished by just one or two people. This project will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing to place these caches.
After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.
