Started in 1971 the "Annual World Tin Bath Championships" are held in the Middle Harbour in Castletown, the ancient capital of the Isle of Man, this event is, as it sounds, a race around the harbour in strictly regulated tin baths, some of which may be less than seaworthy.
Over 100 entrants attempt the 400m course each year, including visitors from all around the world, with much encouragement (and amusement) from the thousands of spectators.
Categories in the Championships are: a Men's Race, Ladies' Race, Snake Race (teams) around the harbour in a series of inner tubes, the Rope Slide, and a human-powered Flying Competition in which entrants attempt to fly over the harbour with varying degrees of success in homemade flying machines.
Organised by the local community to raise money for local charities.
