House of Spirits Riverbox
House of Spirits Riverbox was created in 2009 by artist Mark Soppeland.
The artwork, inspired by Indonesian
Spirit Houses, was originally covered in keys.
This Riverbox, created by artist Mark Soppeland of Akron, Ohio, was inspired by mail art, a 30-year collection of found objects and the Indonesian custom of building a small elaborate house -a Spirit House- that was placed on a pedestal in the corner of one’s property. The house was intended to provide a shelter for spirits that could cause problems if not appeased. Offerings were customarily left at the house to soothe the spirits. An old spirit house should never be discarded but placed together with others somewhere in a field or a wood. Although they aren’t maintained anymore, it is common practice for passers-by to leave a gift at the spot.
Clues:
From the parking lot guarded by Leatherlips, walk north towards the woods line and enter a beaten path.
Continue past the steel cage and then take the path to the right.
Climb the slope until you see the place where the spirits reside.
Walk past the black cage to the edge, then take the path to the right.
Go up the slope, until you see the House on your left.
A proximity issue was resolved in spring of 2022, and the House of Spirits Riverbox could be published as an official Letterbox Hybrid, on Geocaching.com. Sincere thanks to M0m0f5 for releasing her cache from the area.
