O lavadouro era o ponto de encontro da aldeia, o local onde habitualmente as mulheres iam lavar a roupa antes de haver água canalizada e máquinas de lavar. Dado que esta tarefa era demorada, o tempo era também aproveitado para conversar e para trocar informações.
Os lavadouros estão gradualmente a transformar-se em elementos turísticos, havendo a intenção da Câmara Municipal de Grândola de reabilitar o Lavadouro de Canal Caveira, que é um local simbólico e um local de memórias do passado, das histórias da comunidade.
