This litter picking event, is going to be held, in conjunction with "Sodbury and Yate Cleanup Group" 10:00 to 11:15 on Sunday 8th May 2022.

The Clean Up:
The clean up this month is going to be based on Cranleigh Court Road, GZ will now be on Tyndall Avenue (around the corner) outside the primary school.
Arrival <=9.55am and there will be a short introduction etc brief done by the groups leader. You will be expected to sign a disclaimer stating that you have read and understood the Health & Safety Risk Assessment, which will also help me in identifying attendees.
Straight after the brief we will get started on cleaning up the surrounding area, meeting back at the starting co-ords. <=10.55am. There may be drinks and cake/biscuits available for attendees afterwards, there are however various nearby facilities & in town if required.
If you have got your own gloves, pickers and wellies, please feel free to bring them along, however bags, some gloves & litter pickers will be available to borrow. The removal of the rubbish will be organised by the group leader.
Points To Note:
• If a wheelchair user wishes this will be suitable for them to attend, it is also suitable for buggies.
• For public transport information there is a bus terminus nearby and a park & ride plus rail station a little further, email me if you have any queries and I will try to assist.
• If you want to log the CITO, it would be polite to stay and participate in the clean up for a reasonable amount of time.
Health & Safety Risk Assessment:
Most of the content of the assessment is common sense, but it is there just in case you are not aware. Everyone is primarily responsible for their own health and safety and those nearby, please avoid items or areas that may cause injury.
The assessment is as follows:
Hazard – Person/s at risk – Risk level – Action required by individuals or group.
• Cuts to fingers from handling broken glass or sharp metal, scratches/pricks from briers/hawthorns – Volunteers – Low – Wear gloves at all times. Ensure a first aid kit is available on site at all times.
• Slipping on banking or slopes, particularly in wet weather – Volunteers – Low volunteers shouldn’t work alone in these areas and not climb up steep banks.
• Lifting injuries, backs – Volunteers – Medium – Work as a team when faced with heavy objects.
• Tripping over tools or cleared rubbish - Volunteers & the public – Low – Ensure all volunteers know how to use tools safely. Designate a tool store area away from the walkway. Rubbish cleared should be put in nominated safe place where it does not block the walkway or access for other volunteers or passing public.
• Drowning in deep water pools – Volunteers – Medium – Do not approach or work in or near deep water pools. Never work alone near the river.
• Falling while climbing over fence/wall or lifting injury getting litter over a fence/wall. – Volunteers – Medium – Warn them of heavy lifting risk and stress they work in a team.
• Infection from needle – Volunteers – Low – Instruct all volunteers not to touch a needle if they find one do not collect, however note the location and advise the groups leader or myself, I will have a sharps box available?
• Keep bacterial wipes handy, wash/wipe hands to combat Covid and other possible infections, wipes and gel will be available.
•Branches/twigs flicked into faces - this is a common hazard if you are working in wooded areas. advice is not to follow the person in front to closely.
•Climbing injuries - does group need to climb over walls, bridges, vertical banks etc.? Report back if anything needs special attention.
•Falling into deep or fast flowing water - avoid such areas of the river as this could result in serious injury
General Advice:
Do not work alone, particularly off pavements, and keep a first aid kit handy (will be available, along with sharps container, at base for the day).
Always wear gloves and use litter pickers.
Do not lift anything heavy without help.
Use the right tool for the job.
If you do not like the look of it, do not touch but report it!
