Totally Findable Tourist Caches

Welcome to Sydney

This series of geocaches is designed primarily with visitors to Sydney in mind who may have limited time and transport options and want a quick and easy find while out enjoying some sightseeing around this beautiful city.

All cache containers will be one of three types; a flat magnetic key case (MKC), a round film canister (FC or MFC for magnetic) or a fake rock (FR).

The hint will indicate the type of container used and will be very specific to help you find the cache easily. If you want a challenge to find this cache and don't wish to know exactly where it's hidden, do not look at the hint.

At each location you’ll be given some information about the site you are visiting.

Enjoy!

-------------------------------

Hyde Park is the oldest public parkland in Australia.

At the time of European settlement in 1788, local Aborigines hunted ducks in the swampy marshes that was to become Hyde Park. It is also understood to be the site of an important Aboriginal contest ground. Until the mid 1820s, Aboriginal people travelled from all over Sydney and as far away as the Hunter and the Illawarra, to gather there. Bloody fist fights involving up to 100 people, spearings and beatings were used to resolve conflicts.

Before 1810 the area was known as The Common, the Exercising Ground, the Cricket Ground or the Racecourse. On 11th February 1810, Governor Lachlan Macquarie, formally reserved it as open space. He named it "Hyde Park" after the great Hyde Park in London.

The Archibald Fountain located nearby at the centre of ‘Birubi Circle’, was designed by French sculptor Francois Sicard. It commemorates the association between Australia and France in World War 1. It draws its themes from Greek antiquity and is an important example in Sydney of the classical revivalist sculpture of the 1920’s and 1930’s, known as Art Deco.

Today, Hyde Park is frequented by locals and visitors alike. It is a place of quiet beauty. A place to withdraw from the hurley-burley of the city.

I hope you enjoy your visit to this wonderful oasis.
