The history of the Grosse Ile Free Bridge. The bridge has a very close link in history to the Grosse Ile Depot. The Canada Southern railway opened the bridge access between the mainland and Grosse Ile in 1873. Later, Michigan Central Railroad offered everyday travel by residents and visitors across the bridge and on to Detroit and elsewhere. But the Michigan Central Railroad couldn't compete with the automobiles that began crossing at the new Toll Bridge in 1913. In 1928 the Michigan Central discontinued service to Grosse Ile. in 1932 it was converted into the Grosse Ile Free Bridge, which remains standing today. it was closed in May 2020 for repairs. A reopening ceremony was held on December 2, 2021.
