Castle Dale was originally settled in 1879 when Brigham Young issued a call for settlers in San Pete County to come settle the Castle Valley. The oldest headstones in the cemetery show dates in the late 1870's. Castle Dale was officially founded in 1922. The initial desire of the community was to name their town Castle Vale, after the many castle-like geologic formations in the region, but the post office listed it as Castle Dale and it was never changed.
