His biographer says Simpson and his donkey saved hundreds of lives at Gallipoli, Howse saved thousands, and Simpson was only there for a few months. But today everyone associates the Englishman Simpson and his donkey with saving lives at Gallipoli, and very few people have ever heard of the Australian Sir Neville Howse, who was risking his life, saving many more wounded soldiers. He won the VC in the Boer War 1899 to 1901. He then volunteered to go to Gallipoli in 1915.
