I have placed this cache at the bottom of ‘The Big Hill’ that was a challenge to ride up on my trusty pushbike when I was much younger. My old bike had no gears and the hill seemed to be much steeper than it is today. My brother and I often raced each other up the hill and just making it to the top was an achievement. Coming down was another story and thankfully we had no major injuries when the inevitable happened.
Over the years there has been a lot of improvement to the road and approach to the bridge which spans the Hopkins River. The river starts its journey in southwest Victoria near Ararat and meanders 271kms through many small towns until it reaches the Southern Ocean at Warrnambool.
At weekends we used to sandbag the river to make a swimming hole just around the corner from the bridge. We’d spend hours down at the river which looked a lot healthier than it does these days. There used to be a lot of platypus near the bridge but unfortunately I haven’t seen one for quite a few years. Perhaps you might spot one while collecting this cache.
There is parking nearby however at times GZ can be busy. Watch out for traffic and keep a close eye on any little cachers.
