Si parlava di un collegamento in funivia tra Trapani ed Erice fin dagli anni venti del Novecento, quando fu costituito anche un comitato e fu redatto un progetto.
Nel secondo dopoguerra il progetto fu inserito tra le iniziative imprenditoriali del Conte Dino Lora Totino, che fu il progettista e costruttore, tra l'altro, della Funivia dell'Etna e della Funivia dei Ghiacciai. La costruzione della funivia fu intrapresa nella prima metà degli anni Cinquanta; le cabine sono state realizzate dal cantiere San Bernardino di Voltri. Fu finalmente inaugurata nel 1956. Per la sua gestione il conte e ingegnere Lora Totino fondò la S.I.T.A.S. (che gestiva anche la funivia dell'Etna) ma alla fine degli anni sessanta cedette il tutto ad un consorzio formato dal Comune e Provincia di Trapani e dal Comune di Erice, rinunciando alla convenzione per impossibilità di coprire i costi di gestione.
L'impianto, seppur con frequenti interruzioni del servizio, rimase in esercizio ma venne fermato verso l'inizio degli anni ottanta e rimase chiuso per oltre vent'anni.
All'inizio degli anni 2000 si evidenzia la necessità di riattivare la funivia; a tale scopo furono commissionati progetti e preventivi e alla fine fu scelta la ditta Leitner di Vipiteno.
Il tracciato ha riproposto quello della vecchia funivia dismessa ma l'asse dell'impianto ha subito una leggera rotazione, la stazione a valle è rimasta in corrispondenza della precedente stazione alla periferia est di Trapani (Casa Santa) mentre quella a monte è stata spostata più a valle onde evitare di sorvolare una piazzetta a ridosso delle antiche mura all'ingresso di Erice.
La funivia è stata inaugurata l'8 luglio 2005 e ha funzionato dal 2005 al 2017, quando è stata chiusa a causa di un incendio boschivo. La funivia è stata ricostruita e riaperta a giugno 2018 ed è attualmente in funzione nei mesi primaverili, estivi e autunnali.

There was talk of a Trapani-Erice cableway (funivia) connection since the twenties of the twentieth century, when a committee was also set up and a project was drawn up.
After World War II, the project was included among the entrepreneurial initiatives of Count Dino Lora Totino, who was the designer and builder, among other things, of the Etna cableway and the Glacier cableway. The construction of the cable car was undertaken in the first half of the fifties; the cabins were built by the San Bernardino di Voltri shipyard. It was finally inaugurated in 1956. For its management the count and engineer Lora Totino established S.I.T.A.S. (which also managed the Etna cable car) but at the end of the sixties it sold everything to a consortium formed by the Municipality and Province of Trapani and the Municipality of Erice, renouncing the agreement due to the impossibility of covering management costs.
The plant, albeit with frequent service interruptions, remained in operation but was stopped towards the beginning of the eighties and remained closed for over twenty years.
In the early 2000s, the need to reactivate the cableway became evident; for this purpose, projects and estimates were commissioned and in the end the company Leitner of Vipiteno was chosen.
The route reproposed the one of the old disused cableway but the axis of the plant underwent a slight rotation, the valley station remained in correspondence with the previous station on the eastern outskirts of Trapani (Casa Santa) while the upstream one was moved further downstream to avoid flying over a small square close to the old walls at the entrance of Erice.
The cable car was inaugurated on July 8, 2005 and ran from 2005 to 2017, when it was closed due to a forest fire. The cablecar was rebuilt and reopened in June 2018 and it is currently in operation during the spring, summer and autumn months.
