Il porto di Civitavecchia è conosciuto fin dall'antichità come porto di Roma. Fu costruito per volere dell'imperatore Traiano intorno al 106 d.C. come porto di Roma e rappresentò per molti secoli il fulcro di scambi e contatti tra i popoli dell'antico “Mare Nostrum”. Dopo la caduta dell'Impero Romano, il porto e l'insediamento urbano della città, noto come Centumcellae, furono testimoni di un susseguirsi di dominazioni e trasferimenti, contese tra il papato, vari poteri comunali e frequenti incursioni saracene.

The port of Civitavecchia has been known since ancient times as the port of Rome. It was built at the behest of the emperor Trajan around 106 AD. as a port of Rome and it represented for many centuries the fulcrum of exchanges and contacts between the peoples of the ancient “Mare Nostrum”. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the port and the urban settlement of the city, known as Centumcellae, witnessed a succession of dominations and transfers, disputes between the papacy, various municipal powers and frequent Saracen raids.
