In 1907, George Washington Stevens died. In his will, he gave the town of Chester a sum of $11,396.35 to build a town hall in memory of his wife, Lydia. Thus, the idea of Stevens Memorial Hall was born. The school was moved down the road by oxen to make room for the hall. It was finished in September of 1910 and was used for dances, offices for the selectmen, meeting rooms for multiple groups, dances, and more. There were even jail cells in the building when it was first constructed.
