From August 2021 through March 2022, Geocaching HQ unleashed a souvenir challenge called Reach the Peak, inspired by the mountaineering challenge of reaching the summits of the tallest mountains on all seven continents. GCHQ offered up to two new souvenirs each month of the challenge by collecting enough caching points to "reach the summit" of each month's mountain. The points required to earn the summit souvenir corresponded to the height of each target mountain. In all, a total of 15 souvenirs were up for grabs for intrepid cachers.
Puncak Jaya is a mountain in Indonesia on the island of Papua and the tallest mountain peak in Oceania. It is part of the Sudirman mountain range and is the highest island peak in the world.
Vinson is the tallest mountain on the continent of Antarctica. Climbers typically climb Vinson during December and January, which is summer for Antarctica although temperatures that time of year are usually a balmy -29°C.
Elbrus is the tallest mountain in Europe and technically has two summits. The two peaks sit high atop the Caucasus Mountains in southern Russia, where the dormant volcano also offers year-round skiing.
Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa. It's main peak, Uhuru, is on the rim of one of the mountain's three volcanic cones. The two shorter cones, Shira and Mawenzi are extinct. However, the tallest cone is Kibo which has a clear conical shape. Kibo is a dormant volcano and not extinct.
Denali was formerly called Mount McKinley and sits within a national park and nature preserve that is well known for the wildlife that call the area home. If a visitor is lucky, they might get to see a caribou, moose, or grizzly bear from a distance.
Aconcagua is the tallest mountain in Argentina, in the Andes mountain range, in South America, and the tallest outside of Asia. The experience of summiting Aconcagua tops the bucket lists of mountaineers around the world.
Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. Reaching its summit is a crowning achievement in mountaineering. Since the first confirmed summit of the mountain by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, adventurers around the world have traveled to the Himalayas to push themselves to the limit to catch a glimpse of the top of the world. Climbers who take on the challenge of climbing Everest must train and prepare long in advance in order to be ready for the mountain’s high altitude and unpredictable weather.
