West Midlands 2022
The View from Windmill Hill
We're just entering the village of Marchington, or "Mærcham" as it was to the Saxons, or "Merchametone" to the Normans. Over the centuries the village has quietly prospered with both agriculture and trades (such as wheelwrights and builders, connected with the Tutbury Gypsum industry).
Take a look at the view. This is old landscape, likely formed by glaciers in the "Wolstonian" era around 374,000 until 130,000 years ago, where ice from the North Pole reached as far south as present-day Warwickshire. Hopefully today is warmer and you get a clear view across the wide, flat valley to the Derbyshire Dales.
This geocaching trail was laid in conjunction with the landowners along the route, the local councils, the "Transforming the Trent Valley" organisation, and the West Midlands Mega Crew. It was placed by the SOS group of Staffordshire Cachers.
