Strathmore means 'large valley' in Gaelic. The town is named after Claude Bowes-Lyon, the 14th Earl of Strathmore, one of the financiers of the CPR, the father of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the Queen Mother, thus the grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II.
