Geocache Description:

//

Hemi Shrine
//
In 1130, the arrival of Minamoto no Yoshikiyo Kiyomitsu and his son Kiyomitsu, who were exiled from Hitachinokuni (Ibaraki Prefecture) to Kai Province, brought about a great historical upheaval in Kai Province. This was the birth of the Kai Minamoto clan.
Kiyomitsu (1110~1168) found a place called Itsumi (an old name for a plateau at the southern foot of Mt. Yatsugatake) near Omoku (a government-run pasture for raising horses), made it his headquarters, and called himself Hemi Kiyomitsu. In the Hokuto City area where Kiyomitsu made his headquarters, there are many historic sites related to the early Kai Minamoto clan, including the ruins of Wakamiko Castle (Old Castle, South Castle, and North Castle) and Yato Castle, as well as shrines and temples such as Armored Hall, Seiko-ji Temple, Hemi Shrine, and Shirahata Shrine.

The Hemi Shrine has a long history, although the date of its foundation is unknown. The Kai Kuni Shiki describes it as Suwa Myojin, and the "Wanaisho" of Itzumi Township describes it as worshipping the founder of the Hemi clan, Shinra Saburo Minamoto no Yoshimitsu. The splendid main shrine and Noh stage indicate that the shrine was widely worshipped.
The cache is located within the shrine grounds.
