English Laurel and Rockeries and Boxwoods alway say "Homestead" to me! This one has been difficult as the coordinates seem to jump around!
You will find the "Homestead" on the left as you are going up the trail, look to the right just ahead and you will see an English Laurel that is overgrown and a rockery underneath. The Boxwood is in the homestead area and was probably either under a window or next to a door.... I believe these were plancted and placed there by Nellie herself!
Not much is known about Nellie P. Corser (1879-1968) herself. Born Nellie Poppleton, she married Irving Corser, but outlived him by 18 years. The Corsers had a rural home on the property, but both are buried in River View Cemetery in Portland.
If you are looking for a short, family-friendly loop trail (.8 mile RT) in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area this is one that can be done most times of the year. The trail is through old-growth Douglas-Fir and Western Redcedar forming a high canopy and an understory filled with ferns and Oregon grape. The trail loop is triangle-shaped and starts on the right leg at the trailhead. As you ascend the forest the foundation of the original Corser dwelling is a trail feature, albeit slowly being reclaimed by the forest. This first leg is an easy portion of the trail and the few steps are easy to step over.
Note that if you don’t have a Discover Pass, you can also begin the short loop at the Duncan Creek Trailhead and walk up the road 0.2 miles to the Nellie Corser Trailhead.
You are looing for a clear tube with a blue top in the boxwood bush within the homestead foundation. GPS coordinates jusmp around and are different everytime I check it!.
