Geocache Description:

//

Large zelkova tree at Negoya Shrine
//
The two giant zelkova trees (taki and hataki) at Negoya Shrine are both said to be about 800 years old. The local people have long divined the year's crop by the budding of these zelkova trees. The two trees are designated as national natural monuments as giant zelkova trees and as standing side by side.

 The names "Taki" and "Hataki" can be found in "Kai Kuni Shishi" compiled in the late Edo period (1603-1868), and they have been well known as giant trees since that time. Since ancient times, the buds of both trees have been used to predict the year's harvest. It has been said that in years when the buds and leaves of the rice field trees are strong, the rice crop will be good, and in years when the leaves are strong, the field crops will be good. This zelkova tree was an important object of divination and faith for the people of this region, who had devoted themselves to agriculture.

On the mountain behind the shrine are the ruins of Shishiku Castle, which can be accessed from behind the zelkova tree. Shishiku Castle is known as the residence of the Egusa clan of the Takeda clan, and is believed to have been an important location during the reign of Takeda Shingen as a relay base for his beacon network.

 The cache is located near Negoya Shrine.
