A ‘park and grab’ cache, in a tranquil spot, on the way between Capel Curig and Betws-y-Coed - or vice versa. You’ll find the cache on the banks of the Afon Llugwy, by a small lane, near the remains of a roman fort. Take some time to sit by the river and enjoy Eryri - away from the crowds in Betws and busy laybys along the A5!
Little Lanes & Roman Remains
Away from the commuter bustle up and down the A5 is this scenic little lane between Pont Cyfyng and Pont Ty-Hyll. I theorise that the lane is much older than the A5, and as the bridge at Pont Cyfyng was too small to support an upgrade, Telford built the newer main road around it until a more suitable location was found to cross Afon Llugwy, now at Pont Ty-Hyll. I have no evidence behind that statement so feel free to correct me!
What I am certain about are the remains of a roman fort, around 500m west of GZ at Bryn-y-Gefeiliau, also on the south bank of the Llugwy. Built around 2000 years ago, the fort will have defended the valley from challengers of the roman empire, including the Celtic tribes of native Britons. Despite the intention to eradicate Brittonic culture, by the romans and their successors ever since, it still lives on in Wales, as evidenced by the Welsh language.
