Geocache Description:

The Hallett Cove area is best known for its geological history. Many an interesting rock formation can be found here with the Sugarloaf probably the best known feature in its landscape.

There are two other historical aspect that are lesser known.

First of all quite a few dinosaurs bones have been found in the area. Mainly from diprotodons but near the coast also some from the more rare steganographiasaurus or even the fearsome RubrumPisces.

In more recent times Hallett Cove and other beaches were popular landing spots for smugglers.  A large natural cave in Hallett Cove was affectionally known as smugglers cave. Some may remember the cache that was hidden there by TigerMuffin aptly called Smugglers Cave.

The most famous of smugglers was Johannes Trithemus, a pious but fierce man, said to be ‘a great and glorious ruler and an unfathomable general’. He was also quite superstitious and would always quote a ‘Hail Mary’ before landing his ship and recite scriptures, all in Latin of course. Something must have worked as he never got caught and his ships always landed safely. I wonder if any traces from his smuggling days still remain?
