Geocache Description:

Centenary Park, Onchan, has been transformed from rough scrubland into a woodland and wildlife nature reserve by the Isle of Man Woodland Trust. It includes paths, a pond, picnic tables and plenty of trees - 1,261 in all, one for each Manx person killed during World War 1, planted in co-operation with the Royal British Legion.

The area was named Centenary Park to celebrate 100 years of Onchan Commissioners in 1994.

The land has been quarried and then used for landfill in the past. More interesting information about this can be found on the cache page for The Lost Line - GC3PZ9E by Stillroaming.

Before landscaping and planting could take place, a considerable amount of clearing had to be done. Maybe you can spot the COs assisting with that! Many others have worked tirelessly to create the pleasant amenity and wildlife haven we can enjoy today.

To access the area by car, turn north into Highfield Crescent at the traffic lights on Hillberry Road, Onchan. Follow this for about 400 yards where you can park next to the 'village green'. Then walk up Highfield Close to its end and follow the footpath between the two driveways into the park.

The cache is placed with the kind permission of the Isle of Man Woodland Trust.
