Geocache Description:

This geochache is one of eight that are a part of the History of Newfane Geocache Trail. I created this series of Geocaches in order to complete my Gold Award, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve. Local history is particularly important because there are many stories and artifacts that reflect our lives today.         - Grace

In 1900, the construction of the Olcott Beach Hotel started. It was located at the west end of Pine Grove along the southern part of the Lake Ontario shoreline. It was opened to the public on June 22, 1901, even though construction wasn't finished. The formal opening, once construction was completed, was on June 6, 1902. The hotel was gigantic at five stories and held one hundred luxury rooms. Piers surrounding the massive hotel allowed small boats to dock on the outside. By 1912, John Bueckmann closed the doors to the hotel. In 1920, the hotel suffered a devastating fire and was rebuilt and remained in operation. The building was later demolished in 1937. In late 1937, International Railroad Company (IRC) placed the now empty Olcott Beach lot for sale. It was later purchased by a banker and political leader from Niagara Falls, Frederick Krull.
