This geocache is one of eight that are a part of the History of Newfane Geocache Trail. I created this series of geocaches in order to complete my Gold Award, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve. Local history is particularly important because there are many stories and artifacts that reflect our lives today. - Grace
The International Railway Company extended an electric trolley route from Lockport to Newfane around 1898, and it became the most popular form of transportation for sending products from Newfane to places like Lockport, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and further. People who were looking to venture into Olcott from Newfane would have to catch a stagecoach. The IRC began quietly purchasing land from Newfane to Olcott to hopefully extend the railroad. Even Theodore Roosevelt rode the trolley to Newfane in 1899 while he was governor of New York. The expansion of the railway into Olcott from Newfane would be known as the Lockport and Olcott beach Railway. It was officially opened for service on August 29th, 1900 and ran until 1937.
