Geocache Description:

Welcome to the inaugural MI_SUMMER_FUN series. In this series, there are 14 caches plus one mystery bonus cache. In order to locate the bonus, you need to visit this cache and 13 others in this series first. At each cache you will find a bonus code that will substitute in to the following phrase (observe the capitalization) and form the final coordinates (there is a checker at the bottom of the cache page).

Before there were roads, native Americans, adventurers, settlers and soldiers traveled via the natural roads – the waterways. The Great Lakes have been ventured on by everything from canoes to 1000 foot plus freighters. Not every voyage, however, was successful and this has led to a diver's treasure trove. There are countless sunken vessels that can be explored by certified divers and some wrecks that can be seen from shore or from going over them.

Michigan has 12 preserves which are located near: Alpena, Traverse City, Empire, Copper Harbor, Whitefish Point, Drummond Island, the Thumb area, Munising, Straits of Mackinac, Sanilac Shores, Grand Haven, and South Haven. Non-divers can explore shipwrecks, also. There are glass bottom boat tours in Munising and Alpena. Kayakers can also go over the top of a shipwreck in the Thumb area. If you are able to get to South Manitou Island, the remains of two wrecks are visible to all.

Several preserves also have museums nearby. Whitefish Point has a rich collection of artifacts and stories from the Edmund Fitzgerald as well as other vessels that sank in the area. The museum in Alpena has a camera pointed at one of the shipwrecks. If anyone is diving there, visitors can watch the divers explore. Please share your experience if you have ever located a geocache when making a dive!
