This cache is dedicated to the memory of Don Murray, a valued member of our extended geocaching family and his wife, Cecile. He passed away in March of 2022 with only one cache find logged on his account, but over the years he found countless caches with us and for us whenever he was our guide for a hike or walk in and around the Chilliwack area. He loved it when we looked for caches in nearby places like the Rotary Trail, the Great Blue Heron Nature Preserve, Island 22 Regional Park, Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park, Cheam Lake Wetlands, and the Othello Tunnels.
He never used a GPS to find caches. He just would ask us how far it was to the next cache along our route, how big it was, and how it was hidden. Then he would turn and head off, speeding along at the quick march he learned as a young man in the Air Cadets. He would have invariably made the find before we arrived because for him, it was all about the hike or the walk. Finding a cache was just a side benefit of enjoying the outdoors with family.
Don & Cecile were together for 58 years after their marriage in West Vancouver, and loved spending time with their 3 children, 5 grandkids, and a great grandson. They both served in the Chilliwack Rotary for 30 years. Cecile passed away in June 2024, and now they are together again.
This is an easy cache to find as long as you don’t overthink it. You are looking for a palm-sized container near a spot where you can bring your kids (or borrow some!) to find some reading material. Be advised that while the cache's host might resemble a scary Hallowe'en critter, he doesn't bite!
Unfortunately there is no pencil and no room for swag!
The Broken Chain by Ron Tranmer
For Don and Cecile:
We little knew the day that
God would call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn’t go alone.
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories.
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken
and nothing seems the same,
but as God calls us one by one
the chain will link again.
