One of a series of six geocaches on a scenic trail (approx 5km) along the Bridgewater Canal in Worsley/Boothstown/Astley Green. This one is located just off the canal at Whitehead Hall bridge. There is a very small pencil in the cache but you may prefer to bring your own pen.
Britain's first modern canal, the Bridgewater, was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley. The first section from Worsley to Manchester was opened in 1761. The canal stretches 66 km from Leigh to Runcorn and is built all on one level, its route following the contours of the land, to avoid the use of locks.
