Geocache Description:

Penn, the village that inspired the state of Pennsylvania USA.  It is also reputed to be haunted by the ghost of an 18th century farm labourer who appears laughing, on a phantom horse.  The village has also been used as a film location for Nanny McFee, Midsomer Murders and ChuckleVision.

This is a series of caches around the Penn area, mostly traditional caches but also includes a Mystery Cache and a Multi Cache.  If you are doing the whole series, it will pay off to solve the Multi Cache first to save you retracing your steps.

Pen and tweezers may come in handy and a couple of the caches also have room for swaps and travel bugs.

PS!  Following a number of comments about the walk from the church to the cache, please note that there is a footpath opposite the church on Pauls Hill which will avoid most of the road walking.

The cache is not at the posted coordinates.  Here you will find a memorial plaque comemorating a jubilee.

The dates of the jubilee ABCD to EFGH.  Number of years JKK

The cache can be found at N51 DJ.(F-E)(B+H)A W000 (C+D)K.(G+H)(J-B)F

ABOUT THE CHURCH

The parish of Holy Trinity, Penn is the very ancient ecclesiastical parish of Penn, minus parts given to Holy Trinity, Penn Street and St Margaret's, Tylers Green.  It includes the villages of Penn, Knotty Green and Forty Green.

The oldest part of the building is the nave which is late 12th century.  The font and stone coffin also belong to that period.  A Vicar, 200 years ago, claimed to have seen the date 1177 on a foundtation stone under the chancel and three surviving consecration crosses survive from that time.

The tower which was added in the early 14th centrurey has 4 bells.

Medieval wall paintings survive under the whitewash and together with a very rare surviving painting of the 15th C Doom and evidence of a Rood and Rood screen remind us that for the first 350 years of its life, Penn was a Catholic church.
