Geocaching-Etikette
Vorwort:
Geocaching ist ein Spiel. Wie jedes Spiel gibt es auch beim Geocaching Spielregeln und eine Geocaching-Etikette, deren Beachtung zur Frustvermeidung bei Geocachern und Cacheownern führt.
Wenn wir uns mit neuen Geocachern unterhalten, hören wir oft, dass man sich noch nicht an Mysterys herantraut und erst mal ein paar Tradis probieren möchte. Das brachte uns auf die Idee, einen einfachen Mystery (nicht nur) für neue Geocacher anzubieten, damit diese auch in dieser Cachekategorie ohne großen Frust einen Einstieg/Einblick finden können.
Als Thema für diesen Mystery wählten wir die Geocaching-Spielregeln und -Etikette.
Der Mystery soll keinesfalls belehrend wirken, sondern humorvoll einige "Probleme", die uns und anderen immer mal wieder unterkommen, aufgreifen.
[...und ja, tatsächlich ist uns jede der hier aufgeführten Antworten schon einmal untergekommen.]
Prologue:
Geocaching is a game. As with any game, geocaching also has its own rules and geocaching
etiquette, the observance of which leads to avoiding frustration among geocachers and
cache owners.
When we talk to new geocachers, we often hear that they don't dare to tackle mysteries and
want to try a few traditions Traditionals first. This gave us the idea of offering a simple
mystery (not only) for new geocachers, so that they can also find an entry/insight in this
cache category without much frustration.
As a topic for this mystery, we chose geocaching game rules and etiquette.
The mystery is by no means intended to be instructive, but to take up some "problems" that
we and others encounter from time to time in a humorous way.

Die richtig(ste) Antwort liefert den jeweiligen Wert der Variablen (in Klammern hinter der Antwort). Den Variablenwert der richtig(sten) Antwort setzt ihr einfach unter "Ermittlung der Finalkoordinaten" in die Finalkoordinate ein.
The (most) correct answer provides the respective value of the variable (in brackets after
the answer). You simply insert the variable value of the correct (most) answer into the final
coordinate under "Determination of the final coordinates".
Rätsel:
A: Du kannst ein Mystery-Rätsel nicht lösen, also …
- besorgst du dir von einem anderen Cacher oder aus den sozialen Medien die Finalkoordinaten, weil es dem Cache-Owner sowieso egal ist, ob man seine Rätsel auch wirklich selber löst und die D-Wertung ist ja sowieso nur unnützer Statistikkram. => A = 1
- stellst Du das Rätsel zurück und probierst es mit mehr Erfahrung noch einmal. Gegebenenfalls bittest Du, nachdem Du dich schon ein bisschen länger mit dem Rätsel beschäftigt hast, den Cache-Owner um einen kleinen Hint zur Lösung des Rätsels, bist aber nicht sauer, wenn du den nicht bekommst. Die D-Wertung mancher Caches sagen aus, dass sie eben nicht jeder leicht und schnell lösen kann. => A = 0
- lässt du von einem befreundeten Cacher das Rätsel lösen, der dich dann auch gleich im Logbuch miteinträgt, wenn er den Cache besucht. Da spart man ja auch gleich ein bisschen Zeit. => A = 2
- fragst den Cache-Owner sofort nach einem Hinweis und beschimpfst ihn über das Nachrichtencenter und im Online-Log, weil dieser böse Mensch dir nicht gleich die Finalkoordinaten oder wenigstens die komplette Rätsellösung gegeben hat. => A = 3
A: You can't solve a mystery riddle, so...
- Do you get the final coordinates from another cacher or from social media, because the cache owner doesn't care whether you actually solve the puzzle yourself and the D rating is just useless statistical stuff anyway. => A = 1
- you put the puzzle back aside and try again with more experience. If necessary, after you have been dealing with the puzzle for a bit longer, you ask the cache owner for a small hint to solve the puzzle, but don't be angry if you don't get it. The D rating of some caches means that not everyone can solve them easily and quickly. => A = 0
- you let a friend of yours solve the riddle, who then also enters signs you in the logbook when he visits the cache. That also saves you a bit of time. => A = 2
- immediately ask the cache owner for a hint and berate insult him via the message center and in the online log because this evil person didn't immediately give you the final coordinates or at least the complete puzzle solution. => A = 3

- loggst du den Fund online, da du ja schließlich vor Ort warst. => B = 1
- suchst du noch ein bisschen länger. Wenn du dann nichts findest loggst Du ein DNF. => B = 0
- loggst du ein „Needs Maintanance“, weil der Cache, wenn du ihn nicht findest, sicher nicht mehr da ist. => B = 2
- legst du eine neue Dose mit neuem Logbuch aus. Wenn du ihn nicht finden kannst, ist er sicher nicht mehr da und du ersparst dem Cache-Owner ja damit Arbeit. => B = 3
B: You visit the final coordinates but you don't find the cache even though the last online log entry was a find, so...
- you log the find online, since you were there after all. => B = 1
- you search a bit longer. If you don't find anything, then log a DNF. => B = 0
- you log a "Needs Maintenance" because if you can't find the cache, it's probably gone. => B = 2
- you place a new container with a new logbook. Since you didn’t find it, it's probably gone and you help the cache owner by doing his job. => B = 3
C: Du kommst zu den Finalkoordinaten und findest den Cache nach kurzer Suche, also …
- freust du dich über den schnellen Fund und versteckst den Cache nach Eintrag in das Logbuch wieder sorgfältig an der gleichen Stelle, wobei du ggf. die Tarnung wieder so herstellst, wie sie vorher war. => C = 3
- freust du dich über den schnellen Fund und versteckst den Cache nach Eintrag in das Logbuch wieder an der gleichen Stelle. Eine vorher vorhandene Tarnung stellst Du nicht mehr her, da ja auch ein nachfolgender Cacher den Cache schnell finden soll und du sowieso schon spät dran bist. => C = 2

C: You get to the final coordinates and you find the cache after a short search, so...
- You are happy about the quick find and after signing the logbook you carefully hide the cache in the same place, whereby you possibly restore the camouflage to the way it was before. => C = 3
- you are happy about the quick find and hide the cache in the same place again after you signed the logbook. You no longer create a previously existing camouflage, since a subsequent following cacher should also find the cache quickly and you are already late anyway. => C = 2
- you are happy about the quick find and after your log you hide the cache in another place which you think is much more suitable and where the cache will not be found immediately by everyone. The cache owner is sure to be happy about that. => C = 4
D: Du lässt beim Bergen den Cache fallen und findest ihn nicht mehr, also …
- gehst Du einfach wieder, da ihn ja sicher der Nächste findet oder der dann einen DNF loggt. => D = 1
- loggst Du den Fund online, da du den Cache ja in der Hand hattest und somit gefunden hast. => D = 4
- sendest Du dem Cache-Owner eine Nachricht, beichtest ihm dein Missgeschick und bietest ihm vielleicht sogar Ersatz an. => D = 5

- You just go back, since the next person will surely find it or will then log a DNF. => D = 1

- suchst du dir vor Ort einen längeren Ast, schlägst den Cache vom Baum herunter und lässt ihn nach Eintrag ins Logbuch unter dem Baum liegen. Der nächste Cacher hängt ihn ja sicher wieder auf. => E = 5
- freust du dich, dass du den Cache wenigstens gesehen hast. Du ärgerst dich ein bisschen über dich, weil du das Listing und die Attribute nicht richtig gelesen hast und kommst bei Gelegenheit mit einer geeigneten Angel wieder, um den Cache zu bergen und nach Loggen wieder an der gleichen Stelle zu platzieren. => E = 0
E: You get to the final coordinates of a fishing rod cache, you see it hanging 4 meters up, but you don't have a suitable fishing rod with you, so...
- you log the find online, since you have seen the cache and thus found it. => E = 2
- you look for a longer branch on site, knock the cache down from the tree and leave it under the tree after you have signed the logbook. The next cacher will surely hang it up again. => E = 5
- you are happy that you have at least seen the cache. You're a bit annoyed with yourself because you didn't read the listing and the attributes correctly and you come back with a suitable rod to fish / retrieve the cache and place it back in the same place after logging. => E = 0
F: Du kommst zu den Final-Koordinaten eines D5-Angel-Caches und siehst ihn unter dem Baum liegen, also …
- trägst du dich ins Logbuch ein, legst den Cache wieder unter den Baum und loggst den Fund Online mit dem Text „…. diesen D5-Angelcache habe ich super schnell vom Baum geangelt“. => F = 2
- trägst du dich ins Logbuch ein, hängst den Cache mit Deiner Angel an eine geeignete, dem Listing/Hint und Finalkoordinaten entsprechende Stelle. Du machst ein Foto von dieser Stelle und lässt das dem Cache-Owner mit der Nachricht zukommen, dass er den Cache gegebenenfalls kontrollieren und neu platzieren sollte. Du loggst den Fund online und erwähnst dabei, dass der Angel-Cache am Boden lag und du ihn wieder aufgehängt hast. => F = 1
- loggst du den Fund Online und nimmst den Cache mit, da es ja ein D5 ist und die nächsten Cacher nicht so einfach einen schwierigen Cache loggen sollten. => F = 0
F: You get to the final coordinates of a D5 fishing cache and you see it lying under the tree, so...
- you enter yourself in the logbook, put the cache back under the tree and log the find online with the text “…. I fished this D5 fishing cache super fast from the tree”. => F = 2
- after signing the logbook, you hang the cache with your fishing rod in a suitable place corresponding to the listing/hint and final coordinates. You take a photo of this spot and send it to the cache owner with the message that he should check and relocate the cache if necessary. You log the find online and mention that the fishing cache was on the ground and you hung it up again. => F = 1
- you log the find online and take the cache with you, because it's a D5 and the next cachers shouldn't log a difficult cache that easily. => F = 0
G: Du kommst zum Final eines sehr aufwendig gestalteten Caches, an dem man am Final noch ein Vor-Ort-Rätsel lösen muss, um an das Logbuch zu kommen, also …
- loggst Du den Fund online ohne das Vor-Ort-Rätsel zu lösen, da du den Cache ja gesehen und damit ja auch gefunden hast. Außerdem willst du ja nichts beschädigen. => G = 4
- Nimmst Du dir Zeit das Vor-Ort-Rätsel zu lösen, gehst vorsichtig und ohne Gewalt vor. Auch wenn oder gerade weil es ein bisschen länger gedauert hat freust du dich tierisch darüber, die Herausforderung gemeistert zu haben und trägst dich ins Logbuch ein. Genauso vorsichtig und ohne Gewalt stellst du den Ursprungszustand wieder her. => G = 5
- benutzt du ein ECA, um den Mechanismus vor Ort zu umgehen. Nach dem Eintrag ins Logbuch lässt du am besten alles so wie es ist, da der Nächste ja vielleicht nicht so ein tolles ECA wie du hast. Online loggst du "... ohne große Schwierigkeiten, konnte ich mich ins Logbuch eintragen". => G = 6
G: You come to the final of a very elaborately designed cache, where you have to solve an on-site puzzle at the final in order to get to the logbook, so...
- you log the find online without solving the on-site puzzle, since you saw the cache and found it. Besides, you don't want to damage anything. => G = 4
- you take your time to solve the on-site puzzle, proceed carefully and without violence. Even if or precisely because it took a little longer, you are really happy that you have mastered the challenge and you sign the logbook. You restore its original state just as carefully and without violence. => G = 5
- you use tools to bypass the on-site mechanism. Once logged, it is best to leave everything as it is, since the next person might not have such a great equipment as you. You log online "... without much difficulty, I was able to sign the log book". => G = 9
H: Du hast einen Cache gefunden, bei dem sich der Cache-Owner offensichtlich Arbeit mit dem Listing oder/und Versteck gemacht hat, also …
- loggst du den Fund online mit einem „TFTC“, da sich der Owner über das „Danke“ sicher tierisch freut. => H = 0
- loggst du den Fund online mit einem „
“, da sich der Owner ja sicher über so ein Smiley-Bild freut und du ihm ja das Lesen langer Logs ersparen willst. => H =7
- loggst du den Fund online mit einem „+1“, da dann der Owner sofort weiß, dass er in seiner Statistik für eigene Caches einen Fund mehr verbuchen kann. => H =9
- loggst du den Fund online mit einem etwas längeren (oder auch langem) individuellen Log, in dem Deine Anerkennung über die Arbeit, die sich der Owner gemacht hat deutlich wird. Vielleicht schilderst Du auch ein Erlebnis, das du beim Suchen des Caches hattest. Dabei vermeidest du es zu spoilern. Wenn dir der Cache, ggf. das Rätsel oder und das Listing gefallen hat, vergibst Du vielleicht sogar einen Favoritenpunkt, denn dir ist ja auch bewusst, dass schöne Logs der einzige Lohn sind, den Owner für ihre Arbeit zu Gunsten der Geocaching-Gemeinschaft bekommen und sie das vielleicht motiviert, noch weitere schöne Caches auszulegen. => H = 8
H: You found a cache where the cache owner has obviously done some great work with the listing and/or hiding place, so...
- you log the find online with a "TFTC" because the owner will be delighted with the "thank you". => H = 0
- you log the find online with a "" because the owner is sure to be happy about such a smiley picture and you want to save him from reading long logs. => H=7
- you log the find online with a "+1", because the owner then knows immediately that he can book one more find in his statistics for his own caches. => H=9
- you log the find online with a slightly longer (or long) individual log, in which your appreciation of the work that the owner has made is clear. Maybe you also describe an experience you had while looking for the cache. You avoid spoilers. If you liked the cache, possibly the riddle or the listing, you might even award a favorite point, because you are also aware that beautiful logs are the only reward that owners get for their work for the benefit of the geocaching community and that might motivate them to lay out more beautiful caches. => H=8

- nimmst du ihn mit, da es ein Sammel- oder Tauschgegenstand ist. Der sieht sicher schön daheim in deiner Sammelvitrine aus. Durch den Fund geht er ja in dein Eigentum über. => I = 7
- weißt du, dass es sich um einen Travelbug oder eine Geocoin (Trackable) handelt. Du prüfst bei geoaching.com oder einer geeigneten APP, ob und wenn ja, welche Aufgabe/Ziel der Trackable hat. Wenn Du willst und du der Meinung bist dem Trackable ggf. bei Erfüllung seiner Aufgabe zu helfen, kannst du den Trackable mitnehmen. Du loggst die Mitnahme sehr zeitnah im Listing des Trackables. Du legst den Trackable innerhalb weniger Tage/Wochen wieder in einem Cache ab, der idealerweise der Zielerfüllung dient. => I = 6
- weißt du, dass es sich um einen Travelbug oder eine Geocoin (Trackable) handelt. Die Aufgabe des Travelbugs schaust du dir nicht an, da die ja sowieso nur dazu dient, das Listing des Trackables mit Text zu füllen, den sowieso niemand liest. Du loggst die Mitnahme am Ende des Monats im Listing des Trackables, da du das der Einfachheit halber dann für alle gefunden Trackables machst. Dieser schöne Gegenstand kann dich jahrelang begleiten. Hauptsache für den Eigentümer des Trackables ist doch, er wird überhaupt mal geloggt. => I = 5

- you take it with you, since it is a collector's item or a trading item. It will surely look nice in your collection display at home. What you find becomes your property. => I = 7
- you know that it is a travelbug or a geocoin (trackable). You check geoaching.com or a suitable app to see whether the trackable has a task/goal, and if so, what it is. If you want and you think you can help the trackable to fulfill its task, you can take the trackable with you. You log your action very promptly in the listing of the trackable. You put the trackable back in another cache within a few days/weeks, which ideally serves to achieve the goal. => I = 6
