The Green Man
The Green Man is believed to symbolise the cycle of life, death and re-birth, and is a pan-European mythical being with roots deep in the Pre-Christian past - his influence spreads from Scotland to Persia. His origins have been traced to the Romans and Greeks of ancient times. With the spread of Christianity the Green Man moved north into Europe, adopted as a symbol of nature, of resurrection, and for the unconquerable life of the spirit.
A figure celebrated at festivals, The Green Man was the central figure in the May Day celebrations throughout Northern and Central Europe, he has many guises, such as 'Jack In The Green', or the spring-renewing deities in Sufism and ancient Egyptian religions. In all incarnations and faiths, he is the imperious undying spirit of spring. Unlike many of the figures of Scottish folklore he is almost more of an emblem than a character of folklore tales, with the Green Knight of Arthurian Legend being one of the few examples of a 'Green Man' figure featuring actively in a story. More commonly, he is the subject of masonry art and funereal decorations, with green man images often being seen on headstones in the lowlands of Scotland, as well as amongst the many carvings in Rosslyn Chapel in Midlothian. He is seen as a positive force in the world, and the twarter of those malevolent forces of darkness, death and winter.
