Geocache Description:

WELCOME TO MY 1ST PLACED IN-LIBRARY CACHE IN DURHAM...THIS ONE IS DEDICATED TO THE MAN OUTSIDE

Here are a few facts from a few different books about SWS (WILLIAM SAMUEL CLOUSTON STEPHENSON) aka INTREPID:

  • Born in Winnipeg on Jan. 11, 1896, to a Scottish family that operated a lumber mill
  • Father died in the Boer War, fighting for Britain
  • Grew up in Point Douglas district, attended Argyle High School and became an accomplished boxer
  • Once he reached the age of enlistment, he signed up to serve in world war 1 (all of this was an untruth , Bill Macdonald claimed in, “The True Intrepid” that he was born Jan. 23, 1897 as William Samuel Clouston Stanger, to a couple who immigrated to Canada from Iceland his dad died from progressive muscular dystrophy and unable to make ends meet, mum gave SWS up for adoption to Kristin and Vigfus Stephenson, family friends)
  • Young Bill applied his thirst for knowledge, playing with radios, sending Morse code messages to other radio operators and ships on Lake Ontario, played with kites, experimented with steam and read a ton
  • Formally withdrew from school after grade 6, worked as a telegram delivery person and in a lumber yard
  • Became familiar with the Point Douglas neighborhood by riding his bicycle around, delivering messages to businesses and private citizens - this was his first experience with intelligence gathering
  • In 1913, he recognized a robber/murderer, while SWS was out delivering telegrams, and reported him to authorities (3 years later, he joined the 101st Battalion of the Winnipeg Light Infantry for combat service - less than 1 week into his service, he was wounded and gassed in France; ‘although invalied from the army, he found his way back into the war and convinced his superiors he could fight as a fighter pilot - he lost control during battle and crashed, being taken prisoner in 1918, then escaped with a German-made can opener (turns out that there was nothing like it in Canada, so he patented it and began a business - The Kleen Kut can opener
  • Company declared bankruptcy in 1922 but according to the True Intrepid, he went to London
  • In ‘23, he became the managing director of General Radio in London, manufacturing the first home radios (he also was credited with helping develop a process for transmitting photographs by radio waves, establishing the foundation for television
  • Indebted himself to the British in the 1930s by passing along industrial intelligence on the growing German war machine
  • He then built up a business empire, Alpha Cement and Pressed Steel, General Aircraft, Sound City Films, and by the 1930s, he was a millionaire
  • Stephenson’s success soon gave him access to an even more vital commodity in the 1930s Europe - information. In his business travels across Europe, Stephenson soon became the trusted eyes and ears of the British establishment. He fed information about upheaval on the continent to the Industrial Intelligence Centre in Great Britain and Winston Churchill (at this point an MP)
  • He reported on the manufacturing of raw materials, the rearming of Germany’s military and the development of the ENIGMA cipher machine
  • Stephenson became known as God to his staff
  • Was a speed reader with a photographic memory able to scan and absorb voluminous reports in mere minutes

AND here are a few facts about CAMP X

  • A british spy school developed spies during World War 2 from Canada, Britain, Yugoslavia, Hungary
  • In 1940, Stephenson, in conjunction with the Canadian, American, and British governments, established Camp X (Special Training School 103) on a farm outside Whitby, ON
  • The camp was designed to train American and foreign combatants in the secret arts of sabotage and clandestine warfare behind enemy lines in Europe
  • Students learned the intricacies of unarmed and armed combat, explosives and booby-traps, ciphers and codes, as well as escape and evasion techniques
  • Camp X’s “Station M” produced fake documents for agents headed overseas, and with the HYDRA array - a series of radio transmitters - established a secure radio link between Ottawa, Washington, and London
