 I Quattro Elementi - Terra

Fuoco, aria, acqua, terra: elementi naturali da cui trae origine ogni sostanza di cui è composta la materia. Su questa base è formulata la teoria dei quattro elementi naturali, introdotta a partire dal VI secolo a.C dal filosofo greco antico Anassimene di Mileto e successivamente dal filosofo siceliota Empedocle, assimilata anche dai filosofi greci Socrate ed Aristotele.

La terra è l'ultimo, in ordine di sequenza, dei quattro elementi fondamentali secondo le cosmogonie occidentali e le tradizioni sapienziali dell'antichità. Era comunemente associata alla praticità, all'approccio materialista, alla moderazione e alla creatività data la sua natura plastica. Era anche attinente agli aspetti fisici e sensuali della vita, oltre a possedere i seguenti attributi:

• la proprietà del secco e del freddo, che la contrappongono all'aria calda e umida
• il punto cardinale Nord
• il genere femminile

Altri simboli del principio vitale della terra sono il rombo, il quadrato, o la croce, sintesi del quattro.

In alchimia la terra è associata al numero 4, laddove i tre elementi precedenti, il fuoco creatore, l'acqua su cui si esercita l'atto del creare, e l'aria che stabilizza l'equilibrio del creato, si ripresentano mescolati insieme su un altro livello, il quale costituisce dunque il risultato finale della creazione ma anche un nuovo inizio. Identificabile con tutto ciò che è solido e oppone resistenza, anche metaforicamente, la terra secondo gli alchimisti consente di dare luogo al sale dei filosofi se abbinata al fuoco. L'essere elementale invocato nelle trasmutazioni alchemiche in tal caso è lo Gnomo, che opera nel corrispettivo etereo di questo elemento, ossia l'etere-vitale, da cui deriva l'aspetto odierno della creazione nella sua forma solida e minerale. Cercando continuamente di smaterializzare la terra per ricondurla all'etere-vitale, gli Gnomi secondo Steiner si rendono responsabili della fuoriuscita verso l'alto dei germogli delle piante.

Come fuoco, acqua e aria, la terra è inoltre uno dei quattro elementi in cui è suddiviso lo Zodiaco; i segni di terra, in particolare, comprendono Toro, Vergine e Capricorno.

Negli arcani minori dei Tarocchi la terra corrisponde al seme di denari. Tra i quattro umori governa la bile nera, e fra i temperamenti predomina nel malinconico.

Tradizione Occidentale

Secondo la mitologia greca, Prometeo plasmò i primi uomini dalla terra, a partire da un composto fangoso. Col filosofo Empedocle di Agrigento (495 - 435 a.C.), la terra divenne uno dei quattro elementi classici, insieme al fuoco, all'aria, e all'acqua. Empedocle li chiamava "radici".

Platone (427-347 a.C.) accolse nella sua filosofia la dottrina dei quattro elementi di Empedocle. Nel Timeo, suo dialogo cosmologico, il solido platonico associato alla terra è il cubo, che è formato da sei facce quadrate. Egli collocava la terra tra il fuoco (costituito da quattro lati triangolari) e l'aria (rappresentata da otto facce triangolari).

Allievo di Platone fu Aristotele (384 - 322 a.C.), il quale ha fornito una diversa spiegazione per i quattro elementi, basata su coppie complementari. Egli li dispose concentricamente intorno al centro dell'universo, a formare la sfera sublunare. Secondo Aristotele, la terra è sia fredda che secca, e fra le sfere elementali occupa un posto intermedio fra il fuoco e l'acqua. Ai suoi antipodi sta l'aria.

Tradizione Orientale

Nella filosofia cinese la terra (土 in caratteri cinesi, tǔ in pinyin) è il terzo dei cinque elementi, i cosiddetti wu xing, di cui essa rappresenta la fase mediana. Trovandosi al centro del ciclo dei mutamenti, possiede un'energia in equilibrio tra yin e yang, caratterizzata da introspezione e raccoglimento. È il momento della raccolta dopo la massima fioritura dell'estate (fuoco), e difatti corrisponde al periodo dell'anno in cui il Sole è nella Vergine, cioè all'incirca a settembre, o alle ore 15 nella suddivisione della giornata.

Essendo un elemento trasformativo che funge da raccordo, viene associata anche ad ogni transito di stagione, al baricentro tra i quattro punti cardinali, al pianeta Terra, al colore giallo-ocra, al clima umido, al pianeta Saturno, e al Drago Giallo (Huáng-Lóng) che è una quinta creatura mitologica oltre alle quattro costellazioni animali.

La solidità e la stabilità della terra si traducono psicologicamente in una persona pratica, sicura e responsabile, che conta sulla propria intraprendenza e organizzazione per raggiungere obiettivi concreti e durevoli. Altri suoi attributi includono premura, armonia, e radicamento.

In ambito medico l'emozione negativa associata alla terra è però la preoccupazione, a cui fa da contraltare la capacità di riflessione e di ponderazione. Gli organi che essa governa, dimora propria del Qi, sono la milza, comprendente anche il pancreas (di natura yin), e lo stomaco (yang). Questi che sono ritenuti gli organi-madre dell'organismo, in quanto nutrono e conservano il corpo, sono collegati attraverso i relativi meridiani alle funzioni della bocca, dei tessuti connettivi, del sangue, del sistema immunitario, e del seno. Un loro squilibrio, dovuto a un eccesso di pessimismo, può ripercuotersi ad esempio in gastriti, o in disturbi delle difese immunitarie.

Nell'astrologia cinese la terra connota i segni del Bue, del Drago, della Capra e del Cane, sebbene essa costituisca il perno centrale degli elementi come descritto dall'I Ching e nel feng shui, e quindi conferisca le sue qualità a tutti e 12 gli animali. Questi si alternano nel cosiddetto ciclo sessagesimale risultante dalla combinazione dei dieci tronchi celesti, ossia dei cinque elementi nelle loro forme yin e yang, con i dodici rami terrestri, o segni zodiacali cinesi. In particolare:

• gli anni d'acqua di natura yang finiscono in 8 (ad esempio 1978)
• gli anni d'acqua di natura yin terminano con la cifra 9 (ad esempio 1979)

Nel ciclo generativo dei wu xing o cinque elementi, la terra è prodotta dal fuoco, il quale «riduce ogni cosa in cenere che ridiventa parte della terra al fine di nutrire la vita»; la terra a sua volta genera il metallo, poiché «tutti i metalli devono essere estratti dalla terra in cui risiedono».

Nel ciclo distruttivo di controllo, invece, la terra domina l'acqua, perché le dighe e i canali costruiti nel terreno la contengono, ne dirigono il flusso, ed il suolo l'assorbe. Il legno, viceversa, governa la terra impendendone l'erosione, avviluppandola tra le radici degli alberi, prosciugandola e succhiandone i nutrienti.

 The Four Elements - Earth

Fire, air, water, earth: natural elements from which every substance of which matter is made originates. On this basis the theory of the four natural elements is formulated, introduced starting from the sixth century BC by the ancient Greek philosopher Anaximenes of Miletus and subsequently by the Sicilian philosopher Empedocles, also assimilated by the Greek philosophers Socrates and Aristotle.

The earth is the last, in order of sequence, of the four fundamental elements according to Western cosmogonies and the wisdom traditions of antiquity. It was commonly associated with practicality, a materialistic approach, restraint and creativity given its plastic nature. It was also relevant to the physical and sensual aspects of life, as well as possessing the following attributes:

• the property of dryness and cold, which contrast it with hot and humid air
• the north cardinal point
• the female gender

Other symbols of the life principle of the earth are the rhombus, the square, or the cross, a synthesis of four.

In alchemy, the earth is associated with the number 4, where the three previous elements, the creative fire, the water on which the act of creating is exercised, and the air which stabilizes the balance of creation, re-appear mixed together on another level, which therefore constitutes the final result of creation but also a new beginning. Identifiable with everything that is solid and offers resistance, even metaphorically, the earth according to the alchemists allows to give rise to the salt of the philosophers if combined with fire. The elemental being invoked in the alchemical transmutations in this case is the Gnome, who works in the ethereal counterpart of this element, that is the ether-vital, from which the today's aspect of creation in its solid and mineral form derives. Continuously trying to dematerialize the earth to bring it back to the vital ether, the Gnomes according to Steiner are responsible for the upward leaking of the plant shoots.

Like fire, water and air, the earth is also one of the four elements into which the Zodiac is divided; the earth signs, in particular, include Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

In the minor arcana of the Tarot, the earth corresponds to the suit of coins. Black bile rules among the four humors, and melancholy predominates among temperaments.

Western Tradition

According to Greek mythology, Prometheus shaped the first men from the earth, starting from a muddy compound. With the philosopher Empedocles of Agrigento (495 - 435 BC), the earth became one of the four classical elements, together with fire, air, and water. Empedocles called them "roots".

Plato (427-347 BC) accepted the doctrine of the four elements of Empedocles in his philosophy. In the Timaeus, his cosmological dialogue, the Platonic solid associated with the earth is the cube, which is formed by six square faces. He placed the earth between fire (consisting of four triangular sides) and air (represented by eight triangular faces).

A pupil of Plato was Aristotle (384 - 322 BC), who provided a different explanation for the four elements, based on complementary pairs. He arranged them concentrically around the center of the universe to form the sublunar sphere. According to Aristotle, the earth is both cold and dry, and among the elemental spheres it occupies an intermediate place between fire and water. At its antipodes is the air.

Eastern Tradition

In Chinese philosophy the earth (土 in Chinese characters, tǔ in pinyin) is the third of the five elements, the so-called wu xing, of which it represents the middle phase. Being at the center of the cycle of change, it possesses an energy balanced between yin and yang, characterized by introspection and concentration. It is the moment of harvest after the maximum flowering of the summer (fire), and in fact it corresponds to the period of the year in which the Sun is in Virgo, that is, approximately in September, or at 3 pm in the division of the day.

Being a transformative element that acts as a link, it is also associated with each transit of the season, the center of gravity between the four cardinal points, the planet Earth, the yellow-ocher color, the humid climate, the planet Saturn, and the Yellow Dragon (Huáng -Lóng) which is a fifth mythological creature in addition to the four animal constellations.

The solidity and stability of the earth translate psychologically into a practical, safe and responsible person, who counts on his own initiative and organization to achieve concrete and lasting goals. Other attributes of her include thoughtfulness, harmony, and grounding.

In the medical field, however, the negative emotion associated with the earth is concern, which is counterbalanced by the capacity for reflection and weighting. The organs that it governs, the proper abode of Qi, are the spleen, which also includes the pancreas (of a yin nature), and the stomach (yang). These which are considered the mother organs of the organism, as they nourish and preserve the body, are connected through the relative meridians to the functions of the mouth, connective tissues, blood, immune system, and breast. Their imbalance, due to an excess of pessimism, can have repercussions, for example, in gastritis, or in disorders of the immune defenses.

In Chinese astrology the earth connotes the signs of the Ox, the Dragon, the Goat and the Dog, although it constitutes the central pivot of the elements as described by the I Ching and in feng shui, and therefore confers its qualities on all 12 the animals. These alternate in the so-called sexagesimal cycle resulting from the combination of the ten celestial trunks, ie the five elements in their yin and yang forms, with the twelve terrestrial branches, or Chinese zodiac signs. In particular:

• yang nature water years end in 8 (e.g. 1978)
• water years of yin nature end with the digit 9 (e.g. 1979)

In the generative cycle of the wu xing or five elements, the earth is produced by fire, which "reduces everything to ashes which become part of the earth again in order to nourish life"; the earth in turn generates the metal, since "all metals must be extracted from the earth in which they reside."

In the destructive cycle of control, however, the earth dominates the water, because the dams and canals built in the ground contain it, direct its flow, and the soil absorbs it. Wood, on the other hand, rules the earth by preventing its erosion, wrapping it between the roots of trees, draining it and sucking up its nutrients.
