Geocache Description:

Hello. My name is Corvus. I am named after the genus that I am classified under and I belong to the family Corvidae. Corvus is Latin for what most people know me as but there are 40 other species in the same genus.

Although I don’t think it is very fair, if I am with a group of my friends or family we are known as a “murder.” There are several different explanations for the origin of this term, mostly based on old folk tales and superstitions. Many view our presence as an omen of death. But the term “murder of crows” mostly reflects a time when groupings of many animals had colorful and poetic names. Other fun examples of “group” names include: an ostentation of peacocks, a parliament of owls, a knot of frogs, and a skulk of foxes.

The only continent that my genus doesn’t live on is Antarctica. It’s a little too cold there for us. I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t want to live there.

I even have constellation in the southern hemisphere. It is one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy

Carl Linnaeus is known as the “father of modern taxonomy.” He classified my species into its family and genus in the 10th edition of one of his major works, Systema naturæ per regna tria naturæ, secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, cum characteribus, differentiis, synonymis, locis, which is considered the starting point of zoological nomenclature and was written in 1758. That is quite a mouthful, isn’t it?

The coordinates will bring you to the first part of our adventure where I will be waiting for you. I might look a little different than you might be thinking….I’ve been waiting for quite a while. When you find me I will have a clue for you that will bring you to the second part of your adventure. But keep in mind the second part is only available during business hours listed below. Permission has been given for this adventure and I have met some of the great people you may encounter here.

This is available during the winter months but may be a little more difficult if there is a lot of snow.

There may be room for some items to leave behind if you so desire. But, please make sure that the container is closed properly and put back into its correct location so that others may enjoy the adventure. And don’t forget to sign the log. As always please be aware of muggles that may be lurking around. But most of all, have fun.
