Geocache Description:

I had archived this one but its back again!

Rathmullan Gun Battery was built in 1810 during the Napoleonic Wars to help defend Ireland against a possible French Invasion. This beautiful seaside village located on the western shore of Lough Swilly is named after ‘Maoláin’s ringfort’. There are many other historical sites in the area including the ruins of a Carmelite friary and Rathmullan House. Rathmullan was the scene of one of the most important turning points in Irish history when in 1607 the last of the great Gaelic chiefs left Ireland for the last time. They sailed away to the continent to ask the Spanish Monarchy and the Pope for help to regain their lands from the Protestant English and the armies of Queen Elizabeth I. This became known as the Flight of the Earls. This foreboding gun battery was one of six Napoleonic garrisons built along the shores of Lough Swilly. It now houses houses a heritage centre to tell this story how Hugh O’Neill and Rory O’Donnell came to make their escape from Ireland, their journey across Europe and their final resting-place in Rome.
