John Jay, arguably the most important Founding Father born in New York, retired to a 760-acre farm in Bedford after a 27 –year career in public service. The house remained in the Jay family for five generations. Today, Jay’s retirement home, several other buildings dating to his time on the property and 62 acres of his farmstead comprise John Jay Homestead State Historic Site.
From the parking lot, you can follow a depressed path until you are close to the cache. Originally, the path was the route used by ox-drawn farm carts. The path was lowered in relation to the surrounding meadows so farm wagons would be less visible from the piazza (porch) of the main house.
(The main house is closed this year for installation of a fire suppression system and restoration work.)
