John Jay, arguably the most important Founding Father born in New York, retired to a 760-acre farm in Bedford after a 27 –year career in public service. The house remained in the Jay family for five generations. Today, Jay’s retirement home, several other buildings dating to his time on the property and 62 acres of his farmstead comprise John Jay Homestead State Historic Site.
This cache is hidden along a trail that runs along the edge of the historic site. From the trailhead coordinates, you can follow the footpath beyond the cache to a 19th Century schoolhouse and a children’s playhouse dating to the early 20th Century.
(The main house is closed this year for installation of a fire suppression system and restoration work.)
