Abraham Lincoln Slept Here Again // A Redux
Background
This is a night cache, it is meant to be found with a flashlight and/or headlamp during the night. This cache was orginnally placed by Team GeoGriffin, and since then, the tacks have aged and it was later archived. The cache went under the name, Abraham Lincoln Slept Here -- A Night Cache, (GC3C2Y0) and was placed back in 2012. Below, is copied and pasted directly from the orginal description, so you can get a little background info from the orginal:
"In recognition of the 200th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced on February 12, 2009 that the County has renamed Irondequoit Bay Park East in his honor. The beautiful 182 acre County Park, located on the east shore of Irondequoit Bay in the Town of Penfield, will now officially be known as Abraham Lincoln Park."
When the cache was archived, I was a bit sadden to see since it seemed like one of the best night caches in the area for it's time. In fact, it was archived 2 days before I had plans to find the cache with whakmi and CocoClimber04. We spent a long time sifting out some of the tacks, and used some logic to narrow the search. After some great guesses, a couple tacks found, and a lot of backtracking, we evenutally brute forced the final. I had brought some extra fire tacks with me in hopes of replacing some, and maybe getting the cache unarchived, but I never got a message back from TGG. Edina gave me the idea that I should just place a redux cache, and that's just what I did. I have shined up the trail again with new tacks, and cleaned up the container so it's good as new! I suppose if you found the old one, you could go back and find it, BUT, I have hidden a second bonus cache in addition to the first, and it too is a night cache. I would highly recommend going through the original all over again, and then going for the bonus afterwards, since the info you will need is in this cache. Without further ado, let's get into the details!
Park Hours
The park hours vary depending on season. Summer hours run from April 1st to October 31st. The winter hours run in between that time. Here are the hours for each
Summer: 6AM-11PM
Winter: 6AM-4PM (weekdays) 6AM-11PM (Fri, Sat, Sun)
Intructions
At the Posted Coordinates, you will begin your journey. You will be following a set of WHITE tacks. The original tacks were orange and cubed shaped. While most of the trail follows the same path, I have made slight adjustments, so please, if you find any of the old tacks (most have lost the reflective stickers), please remove them for me. The tacks are decently spread out, but I assure you, that you will be on a real trail until the you reach the final. Most tacks should be about 6-8ft high, so make sure you are scaning at eye level. Most night cache rules apply.
1 tack ===== Go foward
2 tacks diagonal ===== turn in the direction of the higher tack
2 CLOSE tacks vertical ===== Cache is within 20ft.
You will know where to go. I like a good night cache that has tacks decently spread out, but you will only turn when you are told. This park has lots of intersections, and only the marked ones you will turn at. If there is a branch trail coming from the left or right, and there is no double tack, go straight. I know this probably doesn't need to be said, but it's worth mentioning. Most intersections of trails also have the next tacks visible from the intersection, or just a couple paces down trail. This park features very steep ascends and descends, so be wary of that before attempting. You will also have to cross a creek at one point. There is a footbridge. There is a set of exit tacks if you choose to do the bonus. They are marked with an "X", and it will converge with this trail, but they will not be available if you only do the bonus cache. NOTICE: There is one sort of tricky turn near the end of your journey, and that is simply only by trail design. Once you reach a hairpin turn in your jouney, stop and look around. You will need to ASCEND, NOT DESCEND. The turn is like 225° from the direction you were heading in. I only mention this because when we were looking for this cache, we missed this and it took us a while to find the right path. The next tack is visible from this double tack.
Please use caution when looking for this cache. The trails are steep, and especially be careful during winter, when trails are slippery. Try to go with at least 1 other person, and give yourselves lots of time. If you choose to do the bonus and take the exit trail from there, the trip will last about an hour to an hour and 30 minutes, and it is about 1 mile round trip.
What to Bring
- Flashlights - I would bring a powerful flashlight, and an extra backup one just in case.
- Headlamp - If you do not have a headlamp, and plan to get into night caching, I would invest in one of these, they are a great tool in addition to the flashlight (Flashlight for scanning, headlamp to illuminate the the trail to avoid rocks, roots, holes, ect).
- Appropriate Footwear - The trails are pretty steep, and have many rocks, mud, and sorts. Good hiking boots or sneakers recommended.
- Sweatshirt or Jacket - You are looking at night, so it does get cool outside.
- Bug Spray - You are in the woods afterall! Mosquitos love illuminate objects.
- A Buddy - Try to avoid night caching alone, it will be a lot harder to seek help during the nighttime in the case of an issue.
- Hiking Stick - If you prefer a hiking stick in certain scenarios, now is the time to bring it!
Final Notes:
The cache is hidden exactly as the previous one. You are looking for a themed container. Credit goes to TGG, since I did not build this contanier. If you haven't already figured out, there is a bonus cache that extends this one. More info on that cache page and special intrustuctions are left inside the conatiner. I also have left the orginal logbook inside the final. Please sign in after the original logs. I want to preserve the original pages. If you choose to follow the bonus trail, upon completing the bonus, you can follow a trail of exit tacks with black "Xs" on them. If you choose to end the day short, then I will leave it up to you to figure out the way back. Sorry, but the cache is meant to be played as a double whammy!
FTF: Congrats to Deathwalker and Eyeash for CO-FTF!!
Note that CocoClimber04 helped me beta test this and is counting as finds... HE ISN't FTF!
