The British Indian Ocean Territory is one of sixteen 'British Overseas Territories', formerly known as 'Crown Colonies'. Unlike the commonwealth realm, they have not become independent nations, but everyone born here is a British Citizen, much like the crown dependencies. Thanks to this island, the phrase 'the sun never sets on the British empire' is sort of still true. It is neither an empire, nor British anymore, and the sun has stopped shining during eclipses where totality engulf this island, but allowing those adjustments it is still true.
