Geocache Description:

Hattiesburg GeoTour

With more than 40 geocache hides to find, Hattiesburg offers one of only 100 active official GeoTours worldwide. Presented by VisitHATTIESBURG, the Hattiesburg GeoTour is the first of its kind in Mississippi.  Locate a minimum of 35 of the GeoTour caches and turn in your completed passport to receive your official Hattiesburg GeoTour Geocoin!

Cache Location

Leave your worries and cares behind and enjoy the peaceful sounds and beautiful scenery of De Soto National Forest, offering year-round recreation opportunities for hikers, bicyclists, campers, paddlers, horseback riders, hunters, and fishermen. Big Creek Landing is a small recreation area perfect for camping or picnicking, launching a boat or canoe/kayak at the concrete boat launch, or trekking in the woods.

Big Creek Landing serves as the northern terminus of the 39-mile Black Creek Hiking Trail.  This is also a popular access point for a float trip on Black Creek - a 21-mile section of which has been designated a Wild and Scenic River, the only river in the entire state of Mississippi claiming that distinction. Bring your own canoe/kayak, or rent one from the nearby Black Creek Canoe Rental, and drift lazily down the creek. Or enjoy the rolling hills, abundant wildlife, diverse flora, and stream crossings along the hiking trail.

The Hide

The cache is a fully-stocked ammo can hidden just a short hike down the Black Creek Hiking Trail. On the way to the cache, you'll pass a few great lookout points to view Black Creek and all its splendor - you'll definitely want to return for a paddle. This is definitely the most difficult-to-find Hattiesburg GeoTour cache, but it's not THAT difficult. It's a short hike (0.2 miles, around 5-10 minutes), just 20 paces off-trail, and in an open area. The ammo can is well-hidden, but the hint puts you right on it. The views are worth a little extra effort!
